We are deeply grateful for the incredible volunteers who make this possible. Their dedication allows us to reach more cancer survivors and caregivers, offering community, connection, and healing through nature.
We are honored to spotlight one of these inspiring leaders — Margaret-Ann Mayer.
Margaret-Ann is a passionate outdoorswoman, nature guide, and lifelong educator with a master’s degree in Botany. She has devoted her life to sharing the beauty and wonder of the natural world. After losing her mother and grandmother to cancer, she now leads hikes with heartfelt purpose — helping others find peace, strength, and joy in the outdoors.
Her impressive background includes serving as a conservation lead for the Southwest Sierra Club, where she works to protect public lands and wildlife. This spring and summer, she will also be giving talks on the extinction crisis, climate change, and practical actions we can all take to help our planet.
Margaret-Ann’s love for nature was cultivated early in Pennsylvania, exploring wildflowers and fossils with her father. That curiosity took her to the University of Colorado, where she spent her weekends hiking the high country. She later taught botany, biology, environmental science, and geology with an indigenous focus at Diné College on the Navajo Nation for 13 years, developing a climate change course for six tribal nations. Her career has also included leading field studies in New Zealand and the Alps, and serving as a ranger naturalist with the National Park Service in Grand Teton, Olympic, Acadia, and Cape Hatteras National Parks.
But Margaret-Ann is not alone in bringing LBL’s mission to life in the Durango area. We are blessed to have an amazing team of leaders and supporters, each offering their unique gifts and generosity: Glenn Bultmann, Janna Ranson, Lynne Sholler and Carroll Groeger.
Together, these dedicated leaders are enriching lives, building community, and helping cancer survivors and caregivers find renewal in the outdoors.
We are so grateful for each of them and invite you to join their hikes and walks — not only to experience the stunning beauty of Southwest Colorado but also to connect with these extraordinary individuals who give so generously of their time, knowledge, and hearts.
